5 inch screen: 0.2″ increase from the Galaxy S3′s 4.8″ screen
Full HD display: Super AMOLED display with a 1920 X 1080-pixel resolution (1080p HD resolution). That’s a considerable improvement from the S3′s 720 x 1280 (720p) resolution
Pixel density: 441ppi (pixels per square inch). Currently this phone with 468ppi has a higher pixel density than the Galaxy S4. The Galaxy S3 has a 306ppi density and the iPhone 5 has a 325ppi.
Glass: Corning Gorilla Glass 3 – 3 times more resistance against scratches – GS3 has Gorilla Glass 2
Super sensitive touch-screen: don’t let the tough Gorilla glass 3 protection mislead you in to thinking that the GS4 will be insensitive. It’s as sensitive as they get. Gloves (a must for cold-weather climates), pencils, forks… you name it! Watch the video below if you don’t believe us.
Size: 136.6 x 69.8 x 7.9mm – the S4 has a larger screen, but a smaller chassis than on the Galaxy S3 (136.6 x 70.6 x 8.6 mm). That’s an impressive feat of Engineering by Samsung!
CPU: 1.9GHz quad-core or 1.6GHz octa-core processor (Exynos 5 Octa processor). GS3 processor was Quad-core 1.4 GHz.
RAM: 2GB (vs 1GB of GS3)
13 mega pixel rear-facing camera – has a LED flash and records 1080p HD video (8MP in Galaxy SIII)
2 megapixel front-facing camera – no front-facing flash (1MP in Galaxy SIII)
Internal memory: choice of 16GB, 32GB and 64GB models
External memory/microSD card slot: up to 64GB
Storage capacity of the Samsung Galaxy S4 is the same as that on the S3
Super fast Wi Fi
1GB per second bandwidth: the GS4 supports 802.11ac 5th generation Wi-Fi which can theoretically give gigabits speed. 4th generation caps at 450MB per second
Built-in remote controller
IR blaster: shoots out infrared (IR) light to remotely control your TV directly from the handset. Samsung promises it works for all televisions, not just Samsung TVs. The app will let you control channels and volume, and even play on-demand content through a partner (quite frankly, I already have plenty of remote controllers and I have no intention of adding yet another remote to make things even more complicated!)
Thinner and lighter: rounded edges and the narrow home button are similar to the Galaxy S3. But at 7.9mm thickness (0.31 inch) and 130g (4.6 ounces), it’s slightly lighter and thinner in spite of the larger screen size.
Sharper edges: The edges are a little sharper than those of the GS3. We personally like that better.
Polycarbonate chassis: Samsung has stuck by plastic for a few good reasons, including durability (it won’t smash like glass), manufacturing benefits, and price. Polycarbonate is a very strong type of plastic.
However, like they say, “Megapixels and gigabytes can be misleading”. So it’s wise to also look at the software features before jumping in on the Samsung Galaxy S4!
Samsung Galaxy S4 Software Specs
OS: Latest Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean
Smart Stay and Smart Pause: eye-tracking technology automatically pauses a video when you stop paying attention
Touch Wiz overlay – Air Gestures: hover your finger over an item to preview it – will register your finger motions from up to two centimeters away. This is an improvement to what was seen on phones like this one and tablets like this one.
Notifications tray toggling options: let’s you quickly turn settings on and off. Includes toggles for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, call-blocking mode and eye-tracking gestures
Multi-view mode: lets you split the screen to interact with two apps, e.g. internet browser and YouTube. Watch the video below for air gestures, multi-view mode and extended notifications tray toggling options etc.
Smart Scroll – tilting the phone to scroll up and down. Watch the video below, you’ll see that it’s not perfect. But hopefully software upgrades/patches will improve these kinds of features in the future
S Translator tool: now embedded into e-mail as well
ChatOn messenger app: deserves special mention because the Samsung-built chat app lets you do three-ways (ahem…3-way video calling that is ), screen-sharing, and video calls making use of both front and rear cameras.
Group Play : no it’s not what you think, group play is a feature that lets you connect (via NFC or Bluetooth) to other Galaxy S4 devices for sharing music, photos, documents etc. Yes, you can use it for playing multiplayer games too. The popular games Gun Bros 2 and Asphalt 7 have been specifically adapted for the GS4 group play.
Integrated optical reader: to scan QR codes
S Health: makes use of phone sensors like the accelerometer and barometer to track your steps, jogs, hops, snacks, and perspiration etc. to act as a calorie-counter/pedometer. Combined with their new Samsung-branded fitness wrist bands, the SGS4 can potentially replace highly popular wireless devices from competitors.
S Voice assistant and S Memo note apps
S Voice Drive: the voice command feature lets drivers use the handset’s built-in navigation system, make phone calls, send messages, and even check the current weather.
Dual-shot mode: lets you take photos and video from both the front- and rear-facing cameras, and combines them into one. I can see this getting very popular.
Sound & Shot: another cool feature which takes a picture and captures up to 9 seconds of audio. Photos with sound? What’s next?
Drama Shot: combines all the actions from a burst shot into a single frame. Reminds me of Harry Potter!
Cinema Photo: lets you animate just one portion of a video while keeping the rest static
Eraser mode: lets you erase an unwanted person from a photo. What took them so long to come up with this?
What’s missing from the Samsung Galaxy S4 smartphone?
Premium build materials – Samsung have stuck to an all plastic (Polycarbonate – a very strong type of plastic) chassis for several reasons. First, it won’t smash like glass, so it’ll be a lot more durable than some others. Secondly, the plastic makes it light-weight. And thirdly, helps Samsung keep the cost of production low, so that more of us can afford it! However, some people don’t necessarily appreciate this because the ‘plastic-feeling’ is not as rich as the anodized aluminum of this new version or this phone .
